Email Bounced sometimes not working
Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at 11:56amHi, we are testing the email bounced function and found that sometimes OneSpan does not send a callback for the "fake" email we use.
For example,
[email protected] - Callback Worked on this email
[email protected] - Callback Did not work
[email protected] - Callback Did not work
[email protected] - Callback Did not work
I tried sending a manual email to that email and get this response from Outlook, so I can confirmed that it is a "wrong" email.
Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups:
[email protected] ([email protected])
Your message couldn't be delivered. The Domain Name System (DNS) reported that the recipient's domain does not exist.

Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at 03:26pmHi Vinh Nguyen,
OneSpan Sign system is designed to elicited OOTO for the following 3 reasons:
1. An auto-response email such as Out of Office (OOTO) is sent.
2. The mail server cannot be reached or the domain is wrong (OSS will search for up to 840 minutes then and generate an OOTO email if unsuccessful).
3. The email is blocked by a spam filter (ex: spamcop, spamhaus, sorbs, etc...)
And your specific case belongs to the second scenario. In this case, your sender should have received a notification email (email.ooto) similar to the attached screenshot. From there, the sender can know more details about the failure reason.

Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at 12:42pmHi Vinh Nguyen,
Thanks for your post! If you are testing with wrong email domain, it could take more than 24hrs and up to several days to get the failure notice. I have sent out a testing transaction with the same recipient list and will update this thread after some time.

Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at 10:30amHi, We did received the callback for those wrong domain emails, however, the callback looks like this:
{"name":"EMAIL_BOUNCE","sessionUser":"Client1","packageId":"dN9lQVeGBtmJHCmBZ5Z_eQLt4XI=","message":"OOTO","documentId":null,"createdDate":"2023-06-07T11:00:53.743Z"}
The test email is: "[email protected]"
For the other wrong domain emails, we received the same kind OOTO callback.
Since it's an "OOTO" message, we treated it as a delivered email and cannot recognize it with the "wrong email" one. Is there a way to tell if this is the wrong domain callback, or it is an actual Out of Office reply from the signer's email.
